“St. Patrick’s Day Weekend is a notoriously deadly period for impaired driving due to the number of celebrations and drivers on the road,” according to STOP-DWI New York, and Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne “urges those taking part in special activities to arrange safe traveling options.”

“New York State Police, County Sheriff, municipal law enforcement agencies and STOP-DWI Programs across the state will be participating in special engagement efforts to reduce the number of alcohol related injuries and deaths,” says STOP-DWI New York.

“Patrols will be out in high numbers to curb impaired driving,” Sheriff Osborne tells us.

In March 2021, 3,363 tickets were issued for driving while impaired across New York State, and statewide, “last year’s St. Patrick’s Day campaign resulted in 1,944 arrests for DWI,” according to a statement from Undersheriff Jennifer Olin. “Between the hours of midnight and 5:59am over the St. Patrick’s Day period in 2019, more than three out of five (63) crash fatalities involved a drunk driver.”

“Impaired driving is completely preventable,” Olin says. “All it takes is a little planning.”

The STOP-DWI Mobile App helps plan designated driver lists, educates about blood alcohol levels, and will help you locate and call a local taxi service for a ride home.

STOP-DWI New York is a statewide program that also targets Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day/End of Summer, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday Season and Super Bowl.
