Standing in Rotary Park in California, overlooking the newly restored Pike Run stream area, California University of Pennsylvania President Dr. Geraldine Jones noted it was the perfect and fitting day for a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony.

“What a wonderful day to celebrate this, because today is Earth Day,” Jones said.

The dedication of the newly restored Pike Run stream kicked off the 22nd annual Pike Run Youth Fishing Festival Saturday morning.

The traditional ribbon cutting ceremony fittingly included a university and public officials as well as a local family who came for the annual fishing event.

The work was completed by the university’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife, Habitat Forever crews, said Jose Taracido, director of the Fish and Wildlife Program at Cal U.

PennDOT approached Taracido last year because the state needed to mitigate a stream for construction work completed on I-70.

The project benefits aquatic, wildlife and insect life, he said.

Taracido said mud seals, log veins and rock veins were installed. Structures were installed to provide movement of the stream. It addressed erosion of the stream bank.

“It will serve as a gateway for students and their families visiting Cal U,” Jones said.

“Having this a few blocks away from the university is an asset to the university.”

Jones noted that students will use the stream as a laboratory to study aquatic life. University students will monitor the stream for five years.

Jones said the project was a collaboration of the state, county and university.

Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi is also a university alumni and a member of the Cal U council of trustees.

“I remember in the 1970s this was just a waste area,” Maggi said.

Maggi said Taracido’s work is known nationally.

“This is for everyone here,” Taracido said. “A lot of times only fishermen know where the mitigation is. Here, the community knows this is here.”

Taracido said the stream is loaded with various fish, from trout and muskie to rainbow darters.

The water quality is improved, Taracido said, noting the stream is no longer muddy from sedimentation. The stream, which was just 2-3 inches deep, is now 3-4 feet deep, making it a great trout habitat. That was evident as local anglers had a field day Saturday.

California Councilman Patsy Alfano praised the work as a great improvement to the park. Other improvements are coming.

Alfano said borough council and recreation committee along with the Rotary Club are working on a project to update lighting at the park, installing LED lights.
